Day 29 | Delight in the Lord
One of my interns likes to say, "Steve, did you hear what I heard about today? It's going to be the best day yet." I like that.
Today, we will ignite our positivity by again taking a devotional from my book Possessing Joy. It is about one of my favorite Bible verses – Psalm 37:4. I really believe this verse is a key verse during this fast.
There are two ways to look at “delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desire of your heart.” The first is that God changes our desires as we delight ourselves in Him. The second is that God blesses our dreams and desires as we delight in Him (knowing that it would be impossible to continue to take pleasure in God if our desires were destructive or sinful). Both of these have truth in them.
Here is the Backlund expanded version of this verse: “Enjoy yourself in the Lord. Relish in His goodness. Revel in the adventure of walking with Him. Savor every moment with Him. Delight in His unconditional love. Get over condemnation, unworthiness, introspection and false humility; and become like a little child in a candy shop with Him.” Does this sound too unrealistic? It isn’t. It is a mindset that can be developed and increased as we get the spirit of religion and performance off of our lives. Again, let’s work with God, not for Him.
Another of the Hebrew definitions of “delight” is to be “soft and pliable.” This is the opposite of the hardening of our hearts. We keep our hearts soft by developing intimacy with our Lord and by responding with delight, hope and faith when His Word is ministered to us.
Finally, the phrase “dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness” needs to be considered. Those who “delight in the Lord” will feed (devotional) on the good things He has done. They will seem to go overboard in thinking about and speaking testimonies of God’s goodness. They will “gorge” on these and delightfully say, “If He did it then, He will do it again.” These people will “dwell” (stay in) the land of proclaiming the faithfulness of God.
Let’s delight in the Lord and He will give us the desires of our heart.
Declare: I delight in the Lord. I continually feed on His faithfulness. He gives me the desires of my heart.
LET'S DECLARE THIS!
"I will rejoice and be glad for this is the day the LORD has made!”
