WORDS ARE POWERFUL
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good” (Gen. 1:1-4).
How do we bring order to disorder? How do we bring life to dead places? How can we influence the future order in the lives of our children? What gives the Spirit of God something to work with so that God’s purposes can be accomplished and His victory released into lives and circumstances? To answer these powerful questions, it is instructional to go back to the beginning and see how God created life in His world. In Genesis 1, the Spirit was hovering over substance that was useless and chaotic. The Spirit saw the potential that was there but was unable to bring change unless given something to work with. That “something” was God’s words, “Let there be light.” Once spoken, the Spirit was empowered to bring order and life to earth and the universe.
We receive further insight in Hebrews 11:3, “the worlds were framed by the word of God.” “Framed” means “to mend what has been broken, to repair, to complete and to put in order.” This verse ends with the phrase, “so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” The natural realm results from things that happen first in the spiritual realm. Just as Jesus’ cursing of the fig tree first affected the unseen roots in Mark 11, so our words affect the spirit realm and eventually impact life on earth. We give the Holy Spirit something to work with to bring order and to repair what’s been broken.
Romans 4:17 says, “God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did.” This passage is referring to Abraham who had his name changed from Abram to Abraham (which means “father of a multitude”). He was to “call those things which did not exist (his uncountable descendents) as though they did.” The Spirit was hovering over His promise for twenty-four years before He really had something to work with in Abraham’s confession. One year after he started calling himself by God’s promise, Isaac was born and Abraham’s avalanche of offspring began.
So how about you? You are made in the image of God. Are you giving the Holy Spirit something to work with on a regular basis so that order and repair can come to your life, to your family, to your church, to your city and beyond? God framed His future by speaking, “Let there be light.” That word is still working. (Scientists say the universe is still expanding.) Let’s frame our future by doing what God does to bring life to dead places – “calling those things that do not exist as though they did.” Truly, LIFE IS IN THE POWER OF THE TONGUE.
