The Law of Words

Law of the Spirit #10: The Law of Words

Excerpt from Divine Strategies for Increase by Steve Backlund

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21)

This law is revealed in the Bible in passages such as: “A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth” (Proverbs 12:14). “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21). “If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue . . .” (James 3:2-5). “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29). “By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked” (Proverbs 11:11). “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so” (James 3:10).

This law will work for us to cause increase and blessing if we love to speak words of life that are in agreement with God’s promises and His perspective. Scripture reveals that good words will satisfy us, cause fruitfulness, bring control to our lives, impart grace to the hearers, exalt cities and direct the course that our lives are going. Those who intentionally “speak life” will become a creative force of blessing for others and themselves. It is one of the most powerful spiritual laws in existence because we understand that for something to happen, something must be spoken.

This law will work against us to restrict and impoverish us if we are in the habit of verbalizing negative conclusions that are contrary to God’s promises. We don’t deny bad circumstances, nor do we walk in fear of talking about problems, but we must know that decline and death are frequently “in the power of the tongue.” Too many people have placed word curses on themselves, others and their circumstances because they don’t know how powerful they are.

This law will bring us into a greater intimacy with God because we will discover that God is a speaker of life over me. He sent His Word in the person of Jesus to heal us. (See Psalm 107:20; John 1:1-3, 14.) We worship and adore Him as the One who is the unceasing speaker of His thoughts toward me––that I have a future and a hope, that I am loved, etc.

I delight in this law by joyfully declaring:

I am a speaker of life.

My words positively set the course of my life and those connected to me.

The word curses of the past have ceased and have been cut off, and now I impart abounding grace to all who hear my words (including me).

About Divine Strategies for Increase

"But his delight is in the law of the Lord . . . and whatever he does shall prosper" (Psalm 1:3)

The laws of the spirit are more real than the natural laws. Just as the law of gravity can work for us or against us, so do God's spiritual laws.

God's laws primarily are principles to release blessing, not rules to be obeyed to gain right standing with God. The Psalmist talks of one whose prime delight is in the law of the Lord. This person not only discovers how to cheerfully make life-changing deposits into the spirit realm, but, more importantly, how to find new aspects of the nature of God (hidden in each law) to behold and worship. The end result of this delighting is a transformed life that prospers in every endeavor. His experience can be our experience, and this book unlocks the blessings hidden in the spiritual realm.
