"I am not trying to build a big church; I am trying to build big people."
- Bill Johnson

Dear Senior Pastors,

"Lord, if I had better people to lead, I could really do something for you." Many pastors have probably thought this, and I am sure "Pastor David" felt the same when "everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him" (1 Samuel 22:2). Maybe even Jesus questioned whether His disciples were worth the investment of His leadership.

God always gathers people of unlimited potential to leaders, but that potential is often hidden behind dysfunctions, bad beliefs, and challenging pasts.

We ministered in a gold mining community for many years. The mine moved hundred of tons of dirt daily to find gold. Even though there was a lot of dirt, they focused on the gold in the dirt. In our ministries, people will not mind us moving their "dirt" if they are convinced we believe there is gold in them.

Click here for a 7-minute audio that will help us draw out the gold in our people.

And here are 8 related core values from my book, Help! I Am a Pastor to consider as we continually grow in drawing out the gold in people:
  • #6. I lead a culture of radical encouragement
  • #14. I am more concerned about building people than I am concerned about building a ministry.
  • #13. I refuse to blame those I lead for the quality of our ministry.
  • #21. When people are struggling, I first seek to help them increase their connection with the Lord.
  • #25. I believe people's negative qualities are usually immature characteristics of positive qualities in their life.
  • #48. My response to something is almost always more than the something.
  • #52. I am a God pleaser, not a people pleaser.
  • #61 - I have high level beliefs about people I'm called to influence.
  • #66 – I motivate people through vision instead of guilt and manipulation.
Thank you for your faithfulness. I bless you with new faith, hope, and love for your people.

Abounding in hope,
Steve
