We are three part beings – spirit, soul, and body. All of these are to be prioritized for healthy and successful living. Our spirit is the part of us that lives forever and connects us to God when we are spiritually born again (John 3:3-8). The soul is our mind, will, and emotions, while our body is the temple the Holy Spirit lives in (1 Corinthians 6:19).
We steward our body well by proper:
We steward our soul through things such as:
- Renewing our mind with truth
Finally, we can strengthen our spirits through:
Of these three, the spiritual aspect of ourselves is the most important. It is foolish to neglect it.
When my wife, Wendy, and I participated in marriage counseling before getting married, our pastor said marriage was like a triangle – with God on top and the husband and wife on each bottom corner. As we both moved closer to God, we would be closer to each other. We have found if there is a distance problem between us, it can usually be resolved by deepening our connection with God.
When Bill Johnson (senior leader at Bethel Church, Redding, CA) came to minister in the church we were pastoring in the ’90s, he would share about one of his favorite counseling techniques. If someone came to him for counsel, he would prescribe to them megadoses of God’s word and tell them, “Come back and see me next week.” They would spend the week consuming Scripture, listening to teaching messages, etc. Bill shared how most of them no longer needed counseling the following week because as they prioritized their spirits, they became stronger.
Here are six steps to move forward in your spiritual life:
- Believe you can – Once you believe you can, you will find a way to do it.
- Repent of poor priorities as needed – Humble yourself before God.
- Make a decision – All of heaven gets behind quality decisions.
- Find someone to walk with on this journey – Jesus sent His disciples out two by two in the Gospels. There was a good reason for this.
- Increase the spiritual flow into your life – Read the Bible, worship, pray, and receive teaching.
- Commit to a group of fellow believers – Connect with them consistently, serve, contribute financially, and use your gifts as part of that spiritual body.
All of us can embrace these six steps in some way. Let’s not neglect the most important part of our lives.
Jesus gave us a great promise concerning prioritizing the spiritual:
“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. (Matthew 6:31-33)
Here is my podcast with much more on this subject. This would be an ideal podcast for seekers and those who might need to recommit their hearts to the Lord.
